I hear a lot of people, be it your family, friends, colleagues, bosses everyone speaks about COMFORT ZONE. I was wondering what is comfort zone actually?

For me I realized, comfort zone never happens overnight, it takes efforts to reach the comfort zone. Its never happened that you started something and felt comfortable doing it. When I started my career, it was only challenges, learning, making my place. Over the time, after doing the same work, you tend to be specialized in it. If same continues, that’s when you build your comfort zone.

All these have not come easily to me. I have worked hard to achieve this. Be it starting my career or getting a job, nothing happened easily but everything was situational. I did go out of my comfort zone and built myself. Eventually practice makes it perfect.


If you ask me, no its not. But then if you think you can do something better, you want to grow, then you need to take action. That can lead to going out of your comfort zone.

When are you out?

If you feel relax doing something, then you’re in your CZ. If you are very keen to do something and you do it without any effort: you are in.

However, if you feel uncomfortable, stressed, hesitant or weak doing something, then doing this particular thing is out of your CZ.

Going out of your CZ basically means being stressed. But it doesn’t make any sense just to be stressed: if you want to make something out of it, you must have a good reason. It must be meaningful. Also, there are some rules. For example, it is NOT about doing something that will make you feel completely shocked or terrorized (the panic zone). It’s not about going too far:

You must do it on purpose. For example, if you take a cold shower because you don’t have any choice, it won’t improve your will power.

Take home points:

Meaning: there should be a why. It has to be useful for you.

Willingness: It should be a choice. Facing unexpected stressing events can lead to depression. Put yourself on purpose in a challenging situation leads to great outcomes.

Comfort zones are not static, they change depending on what areas of life you feel comfortable in. Everyone exists within their comfort zone most of the time, this is no bad thing, the trouble happens when we are too scared to move out of it, and just don’t.

How do you know what is outside of your comfort zone? It’s easy: what scares you? What do you think you can’t do? What makes you vulnerable?

Why step out of your CZ? Because you don’t know what you’re capable of unless you push yourself. You will never grow as a person, know how strong you can be, or accomplish anything you are truly proud of, if you don’t do the scary thing.


When you are in your CZ, you usually feel safe, relaxed, and like everything is in its right place.
I was working for a shipping company, spent my 11 years there.
More than comfort zone, I liked the job that I did, started with no knowledge and built it over the time. And I was quite good at it.

I never realized that this was my CZ, until people started pointing out.

The signs of me being in the comfort zone were:
– I wasn’t afraid of making mistakes coz I was and put up with it, so I felt safe at my position
– I already knew everything I needed to know for this job.
– Every day was the same at work, so I didn’t have to worry something stressful would happen to me.
– Last but not least we had corporate benefits like free medical insurance, events etc.

I worked there for 11 years and then I realized I had to quit and get out for a break,  because otherwise I would be stuck there for ages with my corporate benefits. But i did not find

Here are some examples of things which may currently be outside of your comfort zone:

  • Speaking up in class or business meetings.
  • Meeting new people.
  • Speaking in public and giving speeches.
  • Learning new skills.
  • Traveling to new places.
  • Starting a new business venture.
  • Taking advantage of new opportunities.

Few ways to push yourself out of your comfort zone every day

  • Take the first step. success does not happen overnight, but important step is first step.
  • Put yourself in a new environment….
  • Don’t pick the safe choice. …
  • Take a different route home. …
  • Make a snap decision. …
  • Consider other points of view. …
  • Say “yes” more often. …
  • Volunteer.


  • Greatest contribution of your skills, knowledge.
  • You know what exactly works for you
  • Being confident
  • Minimizing risk
  • Spending less energy on regular tasks


  • Your may feel still
  • Growth looks thin
  • Timings Matter

Final notes:

As I said, being in CZ is not bad, but you need to know when to break this zone. Not everyone needs to struggle over and over. If you are happy with your life, be it. Not every change can make any magic.

Also please note, opposite of COMFORT ZONE is DANGER ZONE.

Break your CZ if you feel you need to stretch yourself. Not coz every next person feels it. There is no magic to know what is good or what is bad. But its your willingness that can lead you to choose the path, success is possible within comfort zone and also beyond comfort zone.
