I had no fear about DIABETICS until I saw my father go through that extreme level. Who does not have sugar these days? Due to lifestyle, due to the eating habits, due to hereditary. My father too had sugar for the last 15 yrs, which was all ok. Last 2 years i.e, early 2018, it happened, my dad started to have some blackish kind of skin on his leg, around his ankle. It was itchy; it was a bit of pain. He used to get leg massages to reduce the pain. It would relax him.
From time to time he would take his medicines without fail, he quit alcohol. While smoking was his drug. In a year’s time, he started getting small boils, these boils were being treated. It went on for months. One fine day, Doctor stated that we need cut off his 2 leg fingers, it was shocking for us all, as his leg was having boils, which were getting healed. But we never knew that was happening externally. Internally there was something else happening.
Well since there was no choice, we had to agree to this. Operation happened. But then started the worst phase. The leg needed regular literally, daily dressing. It was not possible to do at home, so he was visiting the hospital almost every day. High expenses, pain, medicines it was happening too much.
Now by Dec 2019, the wound never healed, rather his body started changing. He was damn sick during Dec, hence got admitted. Daily dressing, medicines, surgeons visit, hospital expenses all was happening. My Dad had started being angry, frustrated, helpless by now. But we felt happy that the Doctors mentioned that his leg is showing healing signs. But by when it would heal was not assured. Various factors involved his age, his body’s response.
But after some reports, doctors had to send the sample to Bangalore for further checking. And the reports were not what we wanted to hear. The decision was to make to amputate his leg, just below the knee. How shocking it is for me to write, it was much more to listen to. And what my father went through was worse. He was the man who walked with pride, he was our hero who gave us everything, ran, walked for us, and stood by us. But now convincing him to agree to amputate his leg was next to impossible. After a week doctors explained and convinced him, thereafter he agreed. Now we see him in a state which is never imagined.
Why it happened? How it happened? Now it really doesn’t matter. But we have realized just by taking medicines it will not heal. You have to workaround. My dad could not quit his smoking habit, occasionally drinks, and more importantly, he never knew to balance his life.
But now not just I, our family have chosen to help people who are suffering from diabetics. We did not have to go very far. Have started it from my mother, mother-in-law and few other family members.
Few things we have started is, we have handed over them the sugar check and BP check machines which will help them to do their checks at home, easily and conveniently. If they are unable to understand the readings they will click a picture of the readings and will whatsapp our family doctors who will advice further action as required.
Also would love to guide and help people if we come across by sharing our knowledge in this matter.
Few lives never get better after a certain time, but HOPE is that keeps going.
